A Brief History Lesson for Those Who Might Not Know

The Tocobaga chiefdom, which oversaw the Tampa Bay area from 900 to 1700 BC, remains somewhat of a mystery. However, tales of their impressive ceremonial temple mounds suggest that these structures helped shield the Bay from devastating hurricanes throughout history. The last major storm to strike Tampa Bay directly occurred in 1921. Unfortunately, many of these mounds have been bulldozed for development, and their secrets have been lost to time.
